COLLABORATING CENTRES 

The CFC/IOOC/04 project has four beneficiary countries from the Southern Mediterranean region: Algeria, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia.

Day-to-day project operations at national level are entrusted to national institutions with the necessary basic capacity to provide the services required. The project is designed, however, to strengthen their capabilities in identified areas to meet the specific needs of the project. The participant institutions were officially designated by their home governments after IOC approval of the project implementation proposal and its subsequent submission to the Common Fund for Commodities for financing through the Second Account.

Algeria

The Institut Technique de l’Arboriculture Fruitière et de la Vigne (ITAF) was established in the 1930s to provide technical support in the implementation of various national agricultural projects, including those concerning the olive. 
 
It groups together several laboratories and researchers in different specialities. Its mission is centred on development, research, professional training and the transfer of technology

Morocco

The Government of Morocco has designated the Direction de la Production Végétale, Ministère de l’Agriculture, du Développement Rural et des Pêches Maritimes (DPV) as the body responsible for project implementation in Morocco.
The DPV is made up of several departments staffed with agronomists in different specialities to implement ministerial strategy for the development of the olive sector

Tunisia

The Institut de l’Olivier (IOS) was established in 1982 as an organization specializing in olive research and development. It is a public administration body under the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture. In the move towards decentralization, the site chosen for the IOS was Sfax, which lies in the arid climatic region of Tunisia. It is responsible for research, studies, experiments and development of the olive sector in the agronomic, processing and economic fields, it  participates in the design of national and regional development strategies and it conducts research aimed at raising productivity in olive farming and olive oil technology. The IOS publishes and disseminates research findings.

Syria

The Olive Bureau (OB) was established in 1980 in the city of Idleb, the area with the highest olive production rates of Syria. The objectives of the OB are to develop and improve olive production and to help to increase farmer income. Specific areas covered by the OB are: varietal research, genetic improvement and production of plant material, study of growing areas, agricultural practices, pruning and tillage, soil fertility and plant nutrition, crop health care and pest control, harvesting, olive oil production, table olive processing and by-product usage. The OB also provides training to disseminate research results
